This article (click the post title) discusses teens' obsession with their image and weight. In conjunction with the article I found this cool flash video about "real beauty." (If you are unable to view it here, you can go to YouTube and search "dove" and "evolution.") I bet you watch it more than once!
I'd like to know what you think about the claims in this article and the movie clip online. Also, do you think these unrealistic expectations are different for boys and girls? If so, why? At what point in a person's life does "beauty"discrimination start?

I think that deep inside, the unrealistic expectations are for both, boys and girls, although girls show it more, one example would be, because they see this beautiful models on magazines, and advertising, but they don't know what's behind it, like in the video.
I think beauty discrimination starts in a person's life, even when they are young, some kids who want to be like little princesses they see on TV. And I think that leads to the teen trying to look like a star.
♥ well i think that unrealistic expectations are for both boys and girls, one example would be when we drive in cars and see the billboards and how all of the people look on them. A great example of people having an image of what pretty is is in the book Uglies. They grow up with people saying that they are ugly they get used to it and think anyone who has one simple blemish is Ugly.
I personaly think everyone has an image in there head of what they think is prety. But a little girl wanting to be a princess i dont belive has the same meaning as a girl who thinks that she is fat or ugly, they are simply just imaging like a little kis should!♥
I am shocked that the article claimed that girls who weigh themselves regularly end up gaining more weight than girls who dont. Also the vidio showed me that models sometimes can look different on t.v. than they do in real life.
I think that both girls and boys can have unrealistic expectations about how they look, but girls would probably care about it more because they look up to and want to look like people they see on t.v.
Beauty discrimination can start as early as young childhood because like am said, young girls would always want to be and look like princesses they see on t.v.
Unrealistic expectations are for both girls and boys. For example, some teenage girls think they have to be a certain weight to be pretty. Then they start to lose weight unhealthily which eventually leads to anarexia. For boys, some boys think they have to be big and strong in order to be accepted in society. So to reach their goal, they take steroids or work out too much and eventually get a hernia. I think beauty descrimination start at different times for different people depending on who you are with.
The movie was very interesting because it showed her basicly getting edited by a computer.
Unrealistic expectations are for both boys and girls however the article talked more about girls unrealistic expectations than boys. However I do think boys have unrealistic expectations too however statistics are higher for girls.
I think that unrealistic expectations start young with stars on t.v. and magazines and they want to be just like them. I continues when they go older by continuesly weighing themselves.
I think that inside the unrealistic expectations are for boys and girls; but more so in girls.A good example of this is the commercials that you see on tv like the dove video clip. Everyones identities are masked due to the computers and all the makeup. I think this descrimination can start when your still young people are always trying to look better than each other or making rude comments about others. I think it can start as young as 3 I say this because at that age kids are looking down on themselfs and trying to be that pretty princess or superhero in the movies and shows they see. I think it differs for girls though because it is a contest to look the best have the nicest clothes while boys are not as bad and they really dont care like girls do.
1. I think that the claims in the article and the movie clip are true. Many girls and boys who step on the scales go to drastic measures to lose wieght. Some of the expectations are different from girls because they take their image to seriuosly, most of the boys dont take it seriously.
2. In a persons life beauty discrimination starts in junior high.
That movie clip changed the way I think about all these pictures of models now. At the beginning, to be honest with you, I didn't think that that lady was good looking. But, the way the computer made her neck longer, made her look skinner.
I think that expectations are different for boys than girls because boys do care what they look like but not as much as girls do. Some girls are perfectly fine but they think that they are ugly and fat so they starve themselves to be skinny.
To me, I think that "beauty" discrimination starts when kids turn into teenagers. I think that because girl teenagers start to read gossip magazines and they see how skinny these models appear.
Wow. That video is disturbing. It's funny though because I always look at girls and magazines and say to my friends "I want that girl's hair!" and they all tell me "It's not like it's real. No one has hair that amazing." and i never really saw what they meant until I watched that movie. My cousin used to work as an intern for Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire [Fashion magazines..] and she had to quit because when she saw all the stick figures come in to model and they still made them skinnier when they edited the photos, it made her literally sick. But I think its really cool to actually see the transformation be done. Expectations for how everyone looks has become ridiculous. I haven't really gotten to the stage where i'm completely obsessed with how I look because eye liner and concealer is too confusing to me right now, but I still am really self conscience. And i'm pretty sure most people that I know constantly care about what people think about them. And it's kind of a sickness that I wish we all didn't have to worry about. It's like life is one big beauty contest.
That video was werid espically the part where she gets put on the computer and they edit her whole face.I never knew they made billboards like that.
This video was very shocking to me. I think that these expections are just for girls. When you think of teens girls look up to these modles who don't even look like that. I think that when a teenager hits "beauty" discrimination is 12-16.
Beauty is an unrealistic goal, especially for women/girls. It's not only the "Stars" or the models or whoever you see on TV. They're all regular looking without makeup, just like all of us.
Girls have it harder, I think. Boys aren't pushed to have the perfect hair, body, and all that stuff that girls are supposed to have.
Although the opinion of beauty starts young, it doesn't really start to bother most everyone until they reach junior high or middle school, I think.
I think that unrealistic expectations are for boys and girls but it points more toward girls because they care about being pretty and feminen while boys don't care much about those things.
In a person's life, beauty descrimination starts around pre-teen to teenage years.
I think that people that are tv shows or magazines don't know about how pqople are changing them in photos and other things. I think it people do this to make the magazine more interesting. I do not like the idea of changing the apearence of people to make it false.
I think that vidoe is pretty crazy how they do that to her on the computer. Yes i think boys have to deal with this issue to but girls have a worse case fo it then guys, girls are so worried about what guys think and how models look that they want to look like the models. I think beauty discrimantion starts at the beggining of middle school, beacuse thats when girls are more interested in guys.
I think that unrealistic expectations are for both buys and girsls. But I think its a lot more towards girls. One reason is because girls are more onto make themselves looking good and are mor into that stuff.
I think beauty discrimination starts at a young age one reason is because little girls want to look like the people they say on tv and if they think they look like it but their friend is fat and ugly they may say something.
Whoa. To think they actaully do so much to a picture to make it look good, but alot more on the fake side.
I think beauty discrimination really gets control of a person mainly in middle school. When they think they have to look better to be like the other good looking people they see.Between girls and boys, boys want to get big strong and buff so they work out.But when they get no results they have a choice to keep trying or take steriods. With girls they want to be like superstars and models that they see on t.v. . So they try lose weight because they think they are too fat which can cause a deteriating disease called Anorexia.Anorexia isa psychiatric diagnosis that describes an eating disorder characterized by low body weight and body image distortion. Individuals with anorexia often control body weight by voluntary starvation, purging, vomiting, excessive exercise, or other weight control measures, such as diet pills or diuretic drugs. It primarily affects young adolescent girls in the Western world and has one of the highest mortality rates of any psychiatric condition, with approximately 10% of people diagnosed with the condition eventually dying due to related factors.(Source: http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Anorexia_nervosa)
